Summary:

As computing experts and microprocessor designers are rapidly reaching the limits of what can be done with silicone, the need for natural solutions such as those based on the human brain (neural networks) or those that use DNA to store and process data (DNA computing) becomes ever more important.

The significance of Biomimetics is perhaps said best in the following quote:

'Nature has been conducting evolutionary experiments for millions of years, so if we're lucky enough to find something close to what we require in nature, then it's very likely to have been highly optimised, and we're unlikely to do much better.' -Greg Parker

Personally, I feel that this something that we should all bear in mind, one flash of inspiration from nature could benefit all of mankind forever.

Article:
Throughout history mankind's progress has been calculated and referred to by his use of materials. Throughout the stone, Titian iron and steel ages these materials made a major contribution to mankind's development. But now in the 21st century, we live in the age of materials. For technology to facilitation further we need to improve all sorts of materials, looking to nature for inspiration.

This exiting field of research is known by several names Bionics, Biomimetics, or Biomimicry. Wikipedia define Biomimetics as

'.. the placement of methods and systems found in nature to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology. This technology transfer is desirable insofar as evolutionary pressure typically forces natural systems to assimilate to highly optimized and efficient. A nondescript example is the development of dirt- and water-repellent paint (coating) from the observation that the surface of the lotus flower plant is practically unsticky for aught (lotus effect). Examples of automatic electronics results in engineering include hulls of boats imitating the skin membrane of dolphins, sonar, radar, and medical ultrasound imaging imitating echolocation of bats.'

Biomimetics has also been one of the most significant forms of inspiration for 21st moon experimental computer science. Seeking Natures instruction has lead to the conception and development of cybernetics, forced neurones, made-up neural networks, and swarm intelligence. One field of experimental computing has superseded nature by simulating evolution, which has produced highly optimised solutions that have not arisen in nature. This exiting field is known as evolutionary computing (Who'd have guessed that one?).

There are countless inventions so far created through the biomimetic approach. Perhaps the most famous of these was created by Swiss engineer George De Mestral in 1948, who astern a walk one day, was cathartic his dog of burrs and suddenly realised how they worked, and shortly after that created Velcro.

As computing experts and microprocessor designers are rapidly reaching the limits of what can be done with silicone, the need for natural solutions such as those based on the human cognition (neural networks) or those that use DNA to store and process data (DNA computing) becomes ever more important.

Summary:The term geode is derived from the Greek word Geoides which means 'earthlike.' A geode is a sphere or oval shaped rock which contains a hollow cavity lined with crystals. Article:The term geode is derived from the card-carrying member word Geoides which means 'earthlike.' A geode is a sphere or oval shaped rock which contains a hollow pocket lined with crystals. Most geodes have a hollow are partially hollow center with quartz crystals and various mineral formations inside. Some geodes a…

2. What is a Coprolite and Where Can I find One?
Summary: By analyzing coprolites, human and otherwise, it is sometimes possible to determine the diet of the animal which produced them and also the health of that animal. Whoever left this magnificent piece of human excrement lying in the dirt a thousand years ago surely couldn't imagine anything of its recent retrieval and subsequent study. The human coprolite is currently undergoing repairs as it was recently broken into several pieces when its display stand toppled. I haven't located any in…

3. Composite Materials in Ships, Pipelines, Liners and Aircraft By Lance Winslow
Summary: One future problem, which has not sufficiently been addressed, is that of the fumes and smoke created when composite material burns. Composite material is a truly great human achievement in material science, however as we use this material in more and more places we need to be acutely aware of the risks and potential consequences of their use. Not all composite Article: One future problem, which has not sufficiently been addressed, is that of the fumes and smoke created when composite…

4. Earthquake Structure Warning Lights for Infrastructure By Lance Winslow
Summary: It is kind of funny watching all these people take such precautions, yet wouldn't you do the same?I propose we put warning lights on the bottoms of over passes which will blink a bright light when a trembler starts so you are not caught under an over pass and crushed to death in your car like a giant crusher at the junk yard car recycling yard. Now realiArticle: For those who live in Earthquake ridden California they know that Earthquakes are completely disruptive to our civilization. …
